Goldenrod (Solidago spp.) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in Europe and North America, where it has been used as a diuretic and to “flush out” the urinary tract. Folk practitioners have recommended goldenrod for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) and other urinary tract conditions, believing that it helps reduce inflammation and promotes urine flow, thus aiding the body’s natural cleansing processes.

However, scientific evidence supporting goldenrod’s efficacy for kidney infections is limited and weak. While laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and mild antimicrobial properties in goldenrod extracts, these studies are mostly preclinical, and there are very few well-designed clinical trials in humans. The available clinical evidence primarily examines its use as an adjunct in lower urinary tract symptoms or in the prevention of kidney stones, not as a direct treatment for kidney infections.

Major health authorities, including the European Medicines Agency (EMA), acknowledge goldenrod’s traditional use for flushing out the urinary tract and as an adjuvant in minor urinary complaints, but they do not recommend it for serious infections such as pyelonephritis. In summary, while goldenrod’s use for kidney infections is rooted in tradition, modern medical guidance does not support its efficacy for this purpose, and it should not replace conventional antibiotic therapy in cases of kidney infection.
