Evidence supporting the use of: Goldenrod (mixed)
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Goldenrod (Solidago spp., often as a mixed extract) has been used traditionally in European herbal medicine to support urinary tract health, including as an adjuvant in the management of kidney and urinary tract infections. The German Commission E has approved goldenrod for use in supportive therapy of bladder and kidney inflammation, citing its diuretic and mild anti-inflammatory properties. However, the direct scientific evidence specifically validating goldenrod for the treatment of kidney infection (pyelonephritis) is limited. Most studies focus on its use as a supportive measure to increase urine flow and reduce irritation, rather than as a primary antimicrobial or infection-resolving agent. Some in vitro studies suggest anti-inflammatory and weak antimicrobial activity, but these findings are preliminary and not directly linked to clinical outcomes in kidney infection. Current clinical guidelines do not recognize goldenrod as a substitute for antibiotics or as a primary therapy for kidney infections. Therefore, while there is a strong tradition of use and some regulatory recognition for its supportive role in urinary tract health, the scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating kidney infection is modest and largely indirect.
