Evidence supporting the use of: Hygrophila
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hygrophila (notably Hygrophila auriculata, also known as "Kokilaksha" in Ayurveda) has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine for urinary tract and kidney-related ailments, including kidney infections. Ayurvedic texts describe its diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and purported antimicrobial properties, and formulations containing Hygrophila are recommended for conditions such as dysuria, nephritis, and urinary tract infections.
However, the scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for kidney infections is limited. Some preclinical studies have demonstrated diuretic effects and mild nephroprotective activity in animal models, and a few laboratory investigations have noted antimicrobial properties of Hygrophila extracts. Despite this, there are no robust clinical trials or comprehensive pharmacological studies directly confirming its effectiveness in treating kidney infections in humans.
Therefore, while the use of Hygrophila for kidney infections is well-established in traditional medicine systems, current scientific validation is weak, mostly limited to animal studies and in vitro findings. Until further clinical research is conducted, its role in kidney infection management remains primarily traditional.
