Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Javanese Turmeric (Curcuma xanthorrhiza), also known as Temulawak, has a long history of use in traditional Indonesian and Southeast Asian medicine. Traditionally, it has been employed for a range of ailments, including liver complaints, digestive issues, and inflammatory conditions. Its use for kidney-related disorders, including kidney infections, is rooted in folk medicine systems such as Jamu in Indonesia, where it is sometimes incorporated into herbal mixtures believed to promote urinary tract health and support kidney function. The plant contains curcuminoids and essential oils, which are thought to possess anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial properties. However, when it comes specifically to kidney infections (pyelonephritis), there is little to no high-quality scientific evidence directly supporting the efficacy of Javanese Turmeric for this indication. Most available modern studies focus on its hepatoprotective (liver-protecting), anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, with only limited or indirect evidence regarding urinary tract or kidney-specific benefits. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest broader antimicrobial activity, but these findings have not been directly translated into clinical evidence for treating kidney infections in humans. As a result, the justification for its use in kidney infections is primarily traditional, with low scientific validation.
