Evidence supporting the use of: Lantana camara
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lantana camara has been used in traditional medicine systems in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America for a variety of ailments, including infections and inflammation. In ethnobotanical surveys, some traditional healers have used decoctions or infusions of Lantana camara leaves or roots to manage urinary tract issues, which may include what is described as kidney infections. However, the evidence supporting its use for kidney infections is largely anecdotal and based on local medicinal practices rather than rigorous clinical validation. Scientific studies have shown that Lantana camara possesses some antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but the majority of these studies are either in vitro (test tube) or involve animal models and do not specifically address kidney infections or pyelonephritis. There are no high-quality clinical trials or pharmacological studies confirming its efficacy or safety for treating kidney infections in humans. Additionally, parts of the plant are known to be toxic, especially to livestock and potentially to humans if ingested in large quantities. In summary, while Lantana camara has a tradition of use for urinary tract and kidney-related issues in certain cultures, there is a lack of strong scientific evidence backing its efficacy or safety for kidney infections. It is not recommended as a primary or sole treatment for such conditions.
