Evidence supporting the use of: Lingonberry
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Scandinavian and Eastern European folk practices. It has been used as a remedy for urinary tract issues, including infections, due to its perceived diuretic and antimicrobial properties. The traditional rationale stems from the presence of proanthocyanidins and other polyphenolic compounds, which are thought to help prevent the adhesion of bacteria (such as Escherichia coli) to the urinary tract lining, similar to the purported mechanism of cranberries.
However, while lingonberry is traditionally used for urinary tract health, including bladder and kidney infections, scientific validation is limited. Most of the research has focused on cranberries, and only a small number of clinical or laboratory studies have specifically examined lingonberries. Some in vitro studies suggest that lingonberry extracts have antimicrobial effects, and a few small clinical studies have explored their use in recurrent urinary tract infections, but there is insufficient evidence directly supporting their efficacy for kidney infections (pyelonephritis). As such, while tradition supports their use, strong scientific backing is lacking, and the evidence level remains low.
