Rating (out of 5): 1
Long Buchu (Agathosma betulina or Barosma betulina) is a plant native to South Africa, traditionally used in herbal medicine for various urinary tract ailments, including bladder and kidney complaints. The leaves have been used as a folk remedy by indigenous Khoisan people and later adopted in Western herbalism during the 19th century, primarily as a diuretic and mild antiseptic for urinary tract infections. The rationale for its use in kidney infection (pyelonephritis) is based on its traditional application for “urinary tract health,” rather than specific treatment of kidney tissue infection. Modern scientific research on Buchu is limited, with most studies focusing on its diuretic properties and some mild antimicrobial activity in vitro. However, there is no significant clinical evidence or well-designed trials supporting its efficacy or safety specifically for kidney infections, which are serious bacterial infections requiring prompt antibiotic treatment. The historical and ethnobotanical literature references its use for general urinary issues, but not specifically for kidney infections as defined in modern medicine. As such, its use for kidney infection remains grounded in tradition rather than validated by rigorous scientific evidence.
