For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Palo Azul (Eysenhardtia polystachya), also known as "kidney wood," has a long history of use in Mexican and Central American folk medicine, primarily as a diuretic and for supporting urinary tract health. Its use in treating or supporting kidney infections is rooted in traditional practices rather than scientific validation. Historically, Palo Azul tea has been consumed to promote increased urine flow and to "cleanse" the kidneys and bladder. However, there is a lack of robust clinical studies or scientific evidence to directly support its efficacy in treating kidney infections (pyelonephritis). Most available scientific literature focuses on its antioxidant and diuretic properties, but does not establish effectiveness against the bacteria or inflammation associated with kidney infections.
While laboratory studies have indicated some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, these findings do not translate to proven clinical benefits for kidney infections in humans. Modern medical guidelines do not recognize Palo Azul as a treatment for kidney infections, which are typically managed with antibiotics and medical supervision due to the risk of complications. Thus, its use is primarily justified by tradition, with very limited scientific backing.
