Evidence supporting the use of: Pareira
For the health condition: Kidney Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pareira (commonly referring to Chondrodendron tomentosum or Pareira brava) has a history of use in traditional herbal medicine, especially in South America, for urinary tract issues, including kidney infections (pyelonephritis). Its primary use is as a diuretic and to promote urinary flow, with traditional healers recommending it for various urinary complaints, such as cystitis, nephritis, and kidney stones. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Pareira found its way into Western herbal and homeopathic texts for similar indications. However, scientific validation for its efficacy in treating kidney infections is lacking. There are very few modern clinical studies on Pareira, and those available focus mainly on its diuretic effects, not specifically on bacterial infections of the kidney. No robust clinical trials demonstrate that Pareira can treat or cure kidney infections, and its use remains rooted in historical and ethnobotanical tradition rather than scientific proof. Therefore, while Pareira is traditionally used for kidney and urinary tract disorders, its efficacy for kidney infections is not supported by current scientific evidence. Caution is advised as untreated kidney infections can be serious and require medical intervention.
