Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Polypodium is a genus of ferns with several species used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Central and South America, and parts of Asia. However, the primary historical uses of Polypodium species (such as Polypodium vulgare and Polypodium leucotomos) have been related to the treatment of respiratory conditions, digestive issues, and skin disorders. Documentation regarding the use of Polypodium specifically for kidney infections (pyelonephritis) is very sparse. In traditional herbal compendiums, some Polypodium species are described as diuretics and have been used for their supposed ability to "cleanse" the urinary tract, which may have led to their occasional application in cases of urinary discomfort or infection. However, there is little to no direct evidence from ethnobotanical records or pharmacological studies supporting the efficacy of Polypodium for treating true kidney infections. Furthermore, no clinical trials or scientific studies have validated its use for this purpose. Overall, while there is a minor traditional rationale rooted in its diuretic use, evidence supporting Polypodium for kidney infection is extremely limited and not scientifically substantiated.
