Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine and other herbal systems for a variety of conditions, including bleeding disorders, diarrhea, and inflammation. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), Sanguisorba officinalis (Di Yu) is sometimes used as part of multi-herb formulas intended to clear heat and resolve toxicity, which can be interpreted as supporting the urinary system in cases of infection or inflammation. However, there is minimal direct historical documentation specifically linking Sanguisorba to the treatment of kidney infections (pyelonephritis) in isolation. Its use in formulas for urinary tract health may have led to its inclusion in some remedies for kidney-related complaints.

Scientific evidence for Sanguisorba’s efficacy against kidney infections is lacking. Preclinical studies indicate that extracts from the plant possess antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, but these studies are usually in vitro and do not directly address kidney infection or human clinical outcomes. There are no well-designed clinical trials supporting its use for this specific condition. Thus, while its use is primarily justified by tradition, the supporting evidence for kidney infections is weak and indirect.
