Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sensitive Plant (Mimosa pudica) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and various folk medicine practices in Asia and Africa. It has been used for a range of ailments, including urinary tract issues and kidney problems. The rationale for its use in kidney infections (pyelonephritis) is based largely on its reputed anti-inflammatory, diuretic, and antimicrobial properties, as described in traditional texts. Some Ayurvedic formulations include Sensitive Plant as a component for remedies aimed at supporting kidney health and treating urinary tract infections.

However, scientific evidence directly supporting its efficacy for treating kidney infections in humans is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies suggest that Mimosa pudica extracts possess antimicrobial activity against certain pathogens and may exhibit renal protective effects. For example, some animal studies have reported nephroprotective and anti-inflammatory activity in models of kidney damage. These findings have not yet translated into robust clinical trials. Thus, while the use of Sensitive Plant for kidney infections is justified by traditional knowledge, scientific validation is currently weak and further research is needed to establish clear efficacy and safety for this indication.
