Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sweet Goldenrod (Solidago odora) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly among Native American tribes and later in European-American folk medicine. Historically, various species of goldenrod have been used to treat urinary tract issues, including kidney infections, due to their reputed diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Preparations from the aerial parts of the plant were commonly brewed as teas or infusions intended to "flush out" the urinary system. The rationale was that increased urination might help clear infections or reduce inflammation.
However, while these uses are well-documented in ethnobotanical sources, the scientific evidence to support the efficacy of Sweet Goldenrod for treating kidney infections is extremely limited. There are a few laboratory studies suggesting that some Solidago species possess mild anti-inflammatory and diuretic effects, but these findings have not been robustly demonstrated in clinical trials, and much of the research has focused on European species such as Solidago virgaurea. No high-quality human studies specifically validate the use of Solidago odora for kidney infections. Therefore, current medical guidelines do not recommend it for this purpose, and reliance on goldenrod should not replace standard treatment for kidney infections, which can be serious and require antibiotics.
