Evidence supporting the use of: Asam gelugor
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Asam gelugor (Garcinia atroviridis) is primarily used in traditional medicine in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia and Indonesia, for a variety of ailments. Its use for kidney stones is based on traditional practices rather than scientific validation. Folk remedies often use the fruit or extracts as a souring agent in food and as a herbal treatment for digestive and urinary conditions, including kidney stones. However, rigorous scientific studies directly evaluating its efficacy for dissolving or preventing kidney stones are lacking.
There are some preliminary phytochemical analyses showing that Asam gelugor contains organic acids (such as hydroxycitric acid), which may influence urinary composition, but no clinical trials or robust animal studies have established its safety or efficacy for kidney stone treatment. Ethnobotanical surveys sometimes mention its use for urinary complaints among local populations, but these are anecdotal. Thus, while its application in this context is rooted in tradition, there is minimal supporting scientific evidence, and its effectiveness remains unproven.
