Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Balloon Pea (scientifically known as Cardiospermum halicacabum) has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Ayurveda and folk medicine in parts of Asia and Africa. Its use for kidney stones is based on traditional practices rather than robust scientific validation. Historically, the plant has been employed for a variety of ailments, including rheumatism, skin disorders, and urinary tract conditions. In the context of kidney stones, traditional healers have used decoctions or extracts of Balloon Pea roots and leaves, often claiming diuretic properties that may help in flushing out small stones or reducing discomfort.

However, the scientific evidence to support such use is minimal. Most pharmacological studies on Cardiospermum halicacabum have focused on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anti-arthritic properties, with very limited research exploring its effects on urolithiasis (kidney stone formation or dissolution). There is a lack of well-designed human clinical trials, and animal studies specifically investigating its efficacy for kidney stones are sparse or absent. Thus, while Balloon Pea may be used traditionally for kidney stone-related complaints, the evidence supporting these uses does not go beyond anecdotal and ethnobotanical reports.
