Evidence supporting the use of: Bergenia
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Bergenia, particularly Bergenia ciliata and Bergenia ligulata, has a long-standing use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani for the management of kidney stones (urolithiasis). Known as "Pashanabheda" in Sanskrit, meaning "stone breaker," extracts from the rhizome of Bergenia have been administered to help dissolve urinary calculi and alleviate associated symptoms. The traditional rationale for its use lies in its reputed diuretic, lithotriptic (stone-dissolving), and anti-inflammatory properties, as described in classical texts. Modern scientific studies on Bergenia’s efficacy against kidney stones are limited and primarily preclinical. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Bergenia may inhibit the formation of calcium oxalate crystals (the most common type of kidney stone) and may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects that could theoretically aid in stone passage or prevention. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and the available evidence is not sufficient to fully validate its traditional use. As such, while there is traditional justification and some preliminary scientific interest, the overall evidence base remains weak, and Bergenia's use for kidney stones is best considered as supplementary or complementary rather than a primary therapeutic option.
