Bergenia pacumbis (synonym: Bergenia ligulata), commonly known as "Pashanbheda" in Ayurvedic medicine, has been traditionally used in South Asian systems for the management of kidney stones (urolithiasis). Scientific investigations have provided moderate support for its lithotriptic (stone-dissolving) and diuretic properties.

Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that aqueous and alcoholic extracts of Bergenia pacumbis can reduce the formation and promote the dissolution of calcium oxalate crystals in animal models. This effect is thought to be due to the presence of bioactive compounds such as bergenin, catechin, gallic acid, and arbutin, which may inhibit stone nucleation, aggregation, and growth. For instance, a study published in Phytomedicine (2006) showed significant antiurolithiatic activity in rats. In vitro studies also suggest that extracts can decrease the size and number of calcium oxalate crystals.

However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence is limited to laboratory and animal studies. While traditional use is well documented, the scientific validation remains moderate, warranting further clinical research before strong recommendations can be made for its use in managing kidney stones.
