Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black Gram (Vigna mungo), known as "urad dal" in South Asia, has been traditionally used in Ayurveda and various folk medicine systems for a variety of ailments, including kidney stones (urolithiasis). Classical Ayurvedic texts mention Black Gram as a diuretic and an ingredient in preparations targeting urinary disorders. The rationale for its use is generally attributed to its supposed ability to promote urine flow and, by extension, assist in the expulsion of small stones or prevention of stone formation. However, scientific validation for these claims is very limited. Only a few animal studies have preliminarily investigated Black Gram extracts for anti-urolithiatic effects, and these studies do not provide robust or conclusive evidence. No large-scale, high-quality clinical trials in humans have substantiated the efficacy or safety of Black Gram for treating or preventing kidney stones. Therefore, while its use is rooted in tradition and some preliminary data may exist, the strength of evidence is weak, and it is not recognized in conventional medical guidelines as a treatment for kidney stones.
