Evidence supporting the use of: Cyperus (unspecified)
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Cyperus species, particularly Cyperus rotundus (commonly known as nutgrass or "motha"), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and Unani. In these traditions, Cyperus is considered to have diuretic properties and has occasionally been recommended for urinary tract health, which includes support for conditions like kidney stones. However, the primary historical uses of Cyperus are more focused on digestive complaints, menstrual disorders, and as an anti-inflammatory agent. The references to its use for kidney stones are relatively sparse and not central to its traditional profile. Scientific studies specifically evaluating the efficacy of Cyperus species in the treatment or prevention of kidney stones (urolithiasis) are extremely limited. Few preliminary animal studies have suggested that extracts from Cyperus may have mild diuretic effects, which could, in theory, support the excretion of urinary calculi. However, there is no robust clinical evidence in humans to validate its effectiveness for kidney stones. Therefore, while there is some traditional basis for its use, the evidence is weak and not well substantiated by modern research.
