Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Dolichos biflorus, commonly known as horse gram, has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic and Siddha medicine systems in India to support the management of kidney stones (urolithiasis). Historical texts and ethnobotanical surveys indicate that decoctions or preparations of Dolichos biflorus seeds have been administered with the belief that they can help dissolve or facilitate the passage of renal calculi. This traditional use is primarily based on anecdotal evidence and empirical practice rather than robust clinical trials.

Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Dolichos biflorus may exhibit antiurolithiatic activity, possibly by inhibiting the formation or aggregation of calcium oxalate crystals, which are the most common constituents of kidney stones. However, these studies are preliminary, limited in scope, and not yet validated in well-designed human clinical trials. No major international guidelines or systematic reviews endorse its use for kidney stones.

In summary, while Dolichos biflorus is widely used in traditional medicine for kidney stones and there is some low-level preclinical evidence suggesting potential efficacy, the overall quality and quantity of scientific evidence is weak. Therefore, its use is justified primarily by tradition, with limited scientific backing as of now.
