Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Frogs and frog-based remedies have a historical presence in various traditional medicine practices, particularly in some Asian cultures. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), parts of the frog—such as the skin, fat, or other tissues—have been used for a range of conditions, including kidney-related ailments. However, the use of frog specifically for the treatment or support of kidney stones is largely based on traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific evidence. Folk remedies occasionally cite the use of frog meat or decoctions as a diuretic, intended to increase urine output and theoretically help expel stones. Despite these historical accounts, there is minimal to no high-quality clinical research validating the efficacy of frog or frog-derived substances in treating kidney stones. Most available evidence is anecdotal, and there are no established active compounds from frogs that have demonstrated stone-dissolving or stone-preventing properties in controlled studies. Modern medical guidelines do not recognize frog as a therapeutic option for kidney stones. Therefore, while frog has a traditional association with kidney health in some cultures, the evidence supporting its use for kidney stones is weak and largely unsubstantiated by scientific research.
