Gokhru (Tribulus terrestris) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for supporting kidney and urinary tract health, including the management of kidney stones. In Ayurvedic texts, gokhru is described as a diuretic and "mutral" herb, which is believed to help flush out small stones and prevent their formation by promoting urine flow and reducing urinary discomfort. The traditional rationale is that increased urine output may help expel or prevent the aggregation of mineral crystals that form kidney stones.

Modern scientific research is limited but does offer some preliminary support. Several animal studies have suggested that gokhru extracts may reduce the formation of calcium oxalate stones, potentially by inhibiting crystal aggregation, reducing oxidative stress, and exerting mild diuretic effects. However, robust human clinical trials are lacking, and the evidence base is not strong enough for definitive conclusions. The herb's use in kidney stone management is therefore primarily justified by tradition, with some emerging but low-to-moderate scientific support. Safety data for long-term use are also limited, so gokhru should not be used as a substitute for medical evaluation and treatment of kidney stones.
