Evidence supporting the use of: Honduran Sarsaparilla
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Honduran Sarsaparilla (Smilax regelii or related Smilax species) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems of Central America, including among indigenous populations. Traditionally, sarsaparilla roots have been used as a general "blood purifier" and as a remedy for a variety of ailments, including rheumatism, skin diseases, and sometimes urinary tract issues. Its use for kidney stones specifically is largely rooted in folk medicine, where it is believed to help "cleanse" the kidneys and promote urinary health, possibly due to its mild diuretic properties.
However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of sarsaparilla for the treatment or prevention of kidney stones. Studies examining its pharmacological actions have primarily focused on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and possible antimicrobial effects, not on direct mechanisms relevant to kidney stone dissolution or prevention. No clinical trials have validated its use for nephrolithiasis in humans. Thus, while sarsaparilla continues to be included in some herbal formulas for kidney and urinary health based on tradition, its role in treating kidney stones is not supported by current scientific research. Anyone considering its use for this purpose should consult a healthcare professional.
