Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lotus seed (Nelumbo nucifera) is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and various Asian folk medicinal systems primarily for its purported benefits on the kidneys, including claims that it can help “tonify” or support kidney function. In TCM, kidney stones are often viewed through the lens of imbalances in the body’s organ systems, and lotus seed is thought to strengthen the kidneys and stabilize essence. However, these uses are largely based on centuries-old pharmacopoeias and anecdotal reports rather than modern clinical evidence. There is a lack of rigorous scientific studies directly investigating the effect of lotus seed or its extracts on the prevention, dissolution, or treatment of kidney stones in humans or animals. While lotus seed contains compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which might be generally supportive of urinary tract health, no published research has demonstrated a direct mechanism or clinical efficacy for kidney stone management. As such, its use for kidney stones is primarily justified by traditional practice, and the scientific evidence supporting this specific application is weak or nonexistent. Therefore, lotus seed should not be considered a validated or effective treatment for kidney stones based on the current state of evidence.
