Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Madder (Rubia cordifolia), also known as Indian madder or Manjistha, has been used in traditional Ayurvedic and Unani medicine for centuries, primarily for its purported benefits in supporting urinary tract health and managing kidney stones (urolithiasis). In these systems, madder is believed to help "break" or "dissolve" stones and promote their elimination from the body. This traditional use is based on empirical and anecdotal evidence rather than rigorous scientific validation.

Modern scientific studies evaluating madder’s efficacy for kidney stones are limited and provide only modest support. Some in vitro and animal studies have suggested that certain compounds in madder, such as ruberythric acid and alizarin, may inhibit stone formation or aid in the dissolution of calcium oxalate stones, which are the most common type of kidney stones. However, these studies are preliminary, often conducted on animal models or in laboratory settings, and human clinical trials are lacking.

Because robust clinical evidence is insufficient, the use of madder for kidney stones should be considered as primarily traditional. While it remains a popular herbal remedy in some cultures, its safety and efficacy have not been conclusively established by modern research. Patients considering its use should consult healthcare professionals, especially since madder can have adverse effects, including potential toxicity with prolonged use.
