Evidence supporting the use of: Mother of Pearl
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Mother of Pearl, also known as nacre, has a history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Chinese medicine, where it is known as "Zhen Zhu Mu." It has been employed for a variety of health conditions, primarily for calming the liver, improving vision, and treating palpitations or insomnia. However, its use specifically for kidney stones is very limited and largely rooted in traditional rather than scientific rationale. Some traditional practitioners may recommend it in the context of "clearing heat" or "sedating internal wind," which can be loosely associated with symptoms that might accompany urinary tract issues, but not specifically kidney stones as understood in modern medicine.
There is currently no robust scientific evidence to support the use of Mother of Pearl for preventing, treating, or dissolving kidney stones. Most scientific research on Mother of Pearl has focused on its material properties or its potential use in bone regeneration and wound healing due to its calcium content and biocompatibility. No clinical trials or preclinical studies have validated its efficacy or safety for kidney stone management. Therefore, while its use for this purpose may have roots in certain traditional practices, it is not supported by credible scientific evidence.
