Evidence supporting the use of: Nettle (mixed)
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Nettle (Urtica dioica), both as a single herb and in mixed herbal formulations, has traditionally been used to support urinary tract health, including kidney stones, in various traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Traditional European Medicine, and folk remedies. The rationale behind its use centers around its diuretic properties, which are believed to increase urine output and potentially help flush out small kidney stones or prevent their formation by diluting urinary minerals. Some historical sources and herbal monographs have described nettle tea as a supportive remedy for kidney and bladder health, although it is rarely used as a primary treatment for kidney stones.
Scientific evidence supporting nettle's use specifically for treating or preventing kidney stones is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have suggested that nettle extracts could have mild diuretic effects and may modestly inhibit crystal formation, but robust human clinical trials are lacking. The European Medicines Agency notes its traditional use as a diuretic, but does not endorse it for kidney stone treatment based on current evidence. Most guidelines and systematic reviews do not mention nettle as a recommended therapy for nephrolithiasis. In summary, nettle’s use for kidney stones is largely based on a traditional rationale, with only weak scientific support for any direct benefit.
