Evidence supporting the use of: Ophiopogon
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ophiopogon japonicus (commonly known as "Maidong" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) is traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine for its supposed benefits on the lungs, heart, and as a yin tonic. In the context of kidney stones, its use is largely based on traditional practice rather than robust scientific evidence. In TCM, Ophiopogon is sometimes included in formulas aimed at nourishing yin and promoting fluid metabolism, with the belief that this may help prevent the formation of stones or mitigate symptoms associated with kidney stones, such as urinary discomfort. However, there is a lack of direct clinical research or controlled trials supporting Ophiopogon for the prevention or treatment of kidney stones. Most references to its use for kidney stones are anecdotal or based on historical texts, rather than modern pharmacological studies. Some in vitro and animal studies have indicated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but these findings do not translate directly to efficacy in kidney stone management. Therefore, while Ophiopogon is occasionally used as part of traditional herbal formulas for kidney health, the evidence supporting its use for kidney stones is minimal and not substantiated by modern scientific research.
