Evidence supporting the use of: Pedra hume
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Pedra hume (commonly known as alum, or "pedra hume" in Portuguese) has a long history of traditional use in some cultures, particularly in Brazil and parts of South America, for a variety of health purposes including as a folk remedy for kidney stones. However, this use is based primarily on anecdotal reports and traditional beliefs rather than robust scientific evidence. There are no well-conducted clinical studies or significant pharmacological data supporting the efficacy of alum (potassium aluminum sulfate) in the prevention, dissolution, or treatment of kidney stones. Most of the available information about its use for kidney stones comes from traditional practices, and there is a lack of published scientific literature evaluating its safety or effectiveness for this indication. Alum is sometimes used topically as an astringent or in water purification, but ingestion can be associated with toxicity, especially in large quantities. Therefore, while pedra hume is used traditionally for kidney stones in some communities, the evidence base is weak, and its use is not supported by modern scientific research.
