Evidence supporting the use of: Potassium aspartate-citrate
For the health condition: Kidney Stones
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Potassium aspartate-citrate is sometimes used as a supplement to help prevent or manage kidney stones, particularly those composed of calcium oxalate or uric acid. The rationale behind its use is based on the known effects of potassium and citrate, both of which are established urinary alkalinizers and inhibitors of stone formation. Potassium citrate is specifically well-supported by scientific evidence: it increases urinary citrate levels, which binds calcium and reduces stone formation, and raises urine pH, making it less favorable for uric acid stone formation. Clinical guidelines recommend potassium citrate for recurrent calcium and uric acid stones.
Potassium aspartate-citrate combines potassium with both aspartate and citrate anions. While potassium citrate’s efficacy is well-documented, there is little direct clinical research on potassium aspartate-citrate as a unique compound for kidney stone prevention. The main scientific justification is extrapolated from the well-established effects of potassium citrate and the safety profile of aspartate as a potassium salt. However, the aspartate component does not have proven direct benefits in stone prevention.
In summary, the evidence supporting potassium aspartate-citrate for kidney stones is moderate (3/5): it is justified by the known benefits of potassium citrate, but there is limited direct research on the aspartate-citrate form itself. Use in this context is based on scientific rationale rather than tradition or unsupported claims.
