Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sarsaparilla (a general term for several Smilax species) has been traditionally used in various herbal systems, including Ayurveda and traditional medicine in the Americas, for a range of ailments, including kidney and urinary tract conditions. Historical texts and herbal compendia mention sarsaparilla as a “blood purifier” and diuretic, which led to its traditional use for supporting kidney health and, by extension, conditions like kidney stones. However, there is very limited scientific evidence to validate these traditional uses. Modern clinical studies specifically evaluating sarsaparilla for the prevention or treatment of kidney stones are lacking. Some phytochemical analyses show that sarsaparilla contains saponins and other compounds that may have mild diuretic effects, but there is no direct evidence that it can dissolve, prevent, or treat kidney stones in humans. Most available information about its use for kidney stones is anecdotal or based on historical practice rather than rigorous research. Therefore, the use of sarsaparilla for kidney stones is justified primarily by tradition, with a low level of supporting evidence.
