Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Buchu (Agathosma betulina), sometimes referred to as "Short Buchu," has a long history of traditional use in South African herbal medicine, primarily for urinary tract ailments. Indigenous Khoisan people and later European settlers used buchu leaves as a diuretic, for "urinary tract cleansing," and to address symptoms of bladder and kidney discomfort. The plant contains volatile oils such as diosphenol, which were believed to promote urination and alleviate inflammation. However, most of the traditional use focuses on general urinary health and as a mild diuretic rather than specifically treating or dissolving kidney stones.

Scientific evidence supporting buchu for the treatment or prevention of kidney stones is minimal. Modern research is limited and largely focused on its antimicrobial and mild diuretic properties. No well-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated efficacy for kidney stones. Therefore, its use for kidney stones is justified primarily by tradition and historical use rather than robust scientific validation. The evidence rating is low (1 out of 5), reflecting the absence of direct clinical support for this specific indication.
