Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sorrel (Rumex spp.), particularly garden sorrel (Rumex acetosa), has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including as a diuretic and for supporting kidney health. In traditional European and folk medicine, sorrel leaves and preparations were sometimes recommended to alleviate symptoms related to kidney stones, likely due to its perceived "cleansing" and diuretic properties, which were thought to help flush the urinary tract.

However, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to support the efficacy of sorrel in the prevention or treatment of kidney stones. In fact, sorrel is high in oxalic acid, a compound that can contribute to the formation of calcium oxalate kidney stones in susceptible individuals. Some scientific sources caution against excessive consumption of sorrel for people prone to kidney stones for this reason. Thus, while traditional usage exists, modern clinical studies do not validate this practice and may even contraindicate it for certain individuals. The evidence supporting its use is therefore very weak, and its traditional use is not supported by current scientific understanding.
