In TCM theory, the “Kidney” encompasses broader functions than the anatomical kidneys, including aspects of reproductive health, bone strength, and vitality. Niu xi is commonly included in formulas intended to support these functions, especially in conditions associated with lower back and knee pain, weakness, or reproductive issues that are linked to kidney deficiency in TCM diagnosis.
From a scientific viewpoint, there is preliminary evidence that Achyranthes bidentata contains bioactive compounds such as saponins, flavonoids, and polysaccharides, which have shown anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and osteoprotective effects in animal and in vitro studies.
