Barleria, particularly species such as Barleria prionitis, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems like Ayurveda and Unani. In these traditions, various parts of the plant (leaves, roots, and flowers) are used for their purported therapeutic effects, including support of kidney function and addressing urinary tract issues. Traditional healers have used Barleria preparations to treat conditions like renal calculi (kidney stones), urinary retention, and general urinary tract health. The rationale for these uses is largely based on empirical observations and passed-down knowledge rather than systematic clinical investigation.
However, scientific validation for the use of Barleria specifically for kidney support is limited. A handful of preclinical studies suggest some antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic properties in Barleria extracts, which could theoretically benefit kidney health. Nonetheless, these studies are preliminary, usually limited to animal models or in vitro experiments, and do not provide direct clinical evidence for efficacy in human kidney diseases. As such, while traditional use is well-documented, robust scientific evidence is lacking, and more research is needed to substantiate these traditional claims.
