Beans, particularly kidney beans and other legumes, have been used in various traditional healing systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and folk medicine, as supportive foods for kidney health. This association is partly due to the "Doctrine of Signatures," an ancient belief suggesting that foods resembling body organs can benefit those organs—kidney beans, for example, resemble human kidneys. In TCM, some beans are considered to have diuretic properties and are thought to help "tonify" the kidneys and promote urinary health. However, the scientific evidence directly supporting beans as a specific remedy or support for kidney function in otherwise healthy individuals is lacking. Nutritionally, beans are high in fiber, plant protein, and micronutrients, which may contribute to general health, but no robust clinical trials show that beans have a unique benefit for kidney function. In people with existing kidney disease, beans may actually be restricted due to their potassium and phosphorus content. Thus, while there is a rich tradition of using beans for kidney health, scientific validation is minimal, and their use is primarily justified by tradition rather than by direct scientific evidence.
