Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bur-Reed (Sparganium stoloniferum), commonly known as "San Leng" in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. Traditionally, it is employed to "invigorate blood," "dispel blood stasis," and address various conditions such as abdominal pain and masses. In TCM, herbs that influence "blood stasis" are sometimes thought to indirectly benefit the kidney system, especially in patterns involving obstruction or stagnation that may affect organ function. However, its direct use for supporting the kidneys specifically is based more on TCM theory and the holistic view of organ interrelationships, rather than direct evidence of renal support.

Modern scientific research on Bur-Reed's effects on kidney health is limited. Most studies have focused on its potential anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, and anticoagulant properties, rather than direct renal support. Existing pharmacological studies are mostly preclinical and do not provide robust evidence for kidney-specific benefits. Therefore, while Bur-Reed is traditionally included in some formulations aimed at supporting the kidney system, especially within the context of TCM syndromes, there is little scientific validation for its direct effect on kidney function. Its use for this purpose remains primarily justified by traditional practice rather than empirical scientific data.
