Carnitine, particularly in its form as L-carnitine, is used to support kidney health, primarily in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) or those undergoing dialysis. The scientific rationale is that carnitine plays a central role in fatty acid metabolism and energy production, and levels of carnitine can become depleted in individuals with impaired kidney function, especially in those on long-term dialysis. Multiple studies have examined the use of L-carnitine supplementation in these populations. Clinical evidence suggests that L-carnitine can help reduce symptoms such as muscle cramps, anemia, and fatigue in some dialysis patients. The National Kidney Foundation and several nephrology guidelines acknowledge its use for certain symptoms in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients who are carnitine-deficient. However, evidence is mixed regarding its benefits for all kidney patients, and routine use is not universally recommended. Most benefits are seen in the context of dialysis-related carnitine deficiency rather than for general kidney health in the wider population. Thus, while scientific validation exists, it is specific to a subset of patients with kidney disease and not for general kidney support.
