Erigeron, commonly known as fleabane, has a history of traditional use in herbal medicine, particularly in North America and Europe. Historical texts and traditional herbalists have sometimes recommended Erigeron species for urinary tract and kidney-related issues, such as promoting diuresis (increased urine flow), alleviating kidney gravel, or addressing mild kidney inflammation. These uses are rooted primarily in folk medicine and early Western herbal traditions, such as those recorded by 19th-century herbalists like John King and Felter & Lloyd. The rationale was based on observed diuretic effects and the belief that increasing urine flow could "cleanse" the kidneys. However, scientific evidence for these effects is minimal to nonexistent. Modern pharmacological studies on Erigeron species are limited, and there is no robust clinical research confirming efficacy or safety for kidney support. Most references to its use for the kidneys are anecdotal or historical, not based on controlled trials or modern phytochemical research.
