Flavonoids, a diverse group of phytonutrients found in many fruits, vegetables, and plant-based foods, have been investigated for their potential role in supporting kidney health. Scientific studies indicate that flavonoids possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties, which may be beneficial in protecting renal cells from damage. Animal studies and in vitro research have shown that certain flavonoids, such as quercetin and catechins, can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in kidney tissues, potentially mitigating the progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury. Some human epidemiological studies suggest that diets rich in flavonoid-containing foods are associated with a lower risk of CKD or improved renal function, although the evidence is not yet conclusive due to confounding dietary factors and limited interventional trials directly assessing flavonoid supplementation in humans with kidney disease.
