Evidence supporting the use of: Fringed Pink
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fringed Pink (Dianthus superbus) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), where it is known as "qu mai." In TCM, it is commonly used as a diuretic and is believed to support the urinary and kidney systems by promoting urination and removing damp heat from the body. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" and other classic materia medica mention its use for treating urinary difficulty, edema, and related conditions. The traditional rationale is rooted in the herb’s perceived ability to clear heat and facilitate the flow of urine, which indirectly supports kidney function according to TCM theory.
However, scientific validation for these uses remains limited. While some phytochemical studies have identified the presence of saponins, flavonoids, and other bioactive components in Dianthus superbus, robust clinical trials or pharmacological research specifically supporting its efficacy for kidney health in humans are lacking. Most available studies are either in vitro or animal-based, with a focus on its diuretic effects rather than direct support of kidney function. Thus, while the use of Fringed Pink for kidney support is justified by tradition, it has not been substantiated by modern scientific research to date.
