Glutathione peroxidase is an antioxidant enzyme that plays a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative damage by reducing hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides. The kidneys are highly susceptible to oxidative stress due to their function in filtering blood and concentrating toxins. Scientific studies have shown that glutathione peroxidase activity is essential in maintaining renal cellular integrity and function. Decreased glutathione peroxidase activity has been associated with various kidney diseases, including acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease.
