Evidence supporting the use of: Hygrophila
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hygrophila (Hygrophila auriculata), also known as "Kokilaksha" in Ayurveda, has a long history of use in traditional Indian medicine for supporting kidney and urinary tract health. In Ayurveda, it is classified as a "diuretic" and is prescribed for conditions such as urinary retention, kidney stones, and general urinary tract discomfort. The roots and seeds are most commonly used, either alone or in combination with other herbs.
Scientific research on Hygrophila's effects on the kidneys is limited but does provide some preliminary support for its traditional use. A few animal studies suggest that extracts from the plant can increase urine output and may offer some protection against experimentally-induced nephrotoxicity (kidney damage). For example, studies have documented increased diuresis and mild nephroprotective effects in rats. However, these studies are not extensive, often use high doses, and results have not been robustly replicated in human clinical trials.
Overall, the use of Hygrophila for kidney support is justified primarily by traditional knowledge, with only limited scientific investigation and validation. Until more rigorous human studies are conducted, its efficacy and safety for this application remain uncertain, and its use should be approached with caution.
