Indian Sarsaparilla (Hemidesmus indicus) has a longstanding history of use in Ayurvedic and other traditional Indian medical systems for supporting kidney health and urinary function. Traditional texts describe it as a "blood purifier" and a cooling herb, often used in formulations for detoxification, urinary tract issues, and to support the body's natural elimination pathways. It is sometimes employed to alleviate symptoms associated with kidney or urinary discomfort, and as an adjunct in the management of conditions such as urinary tract infections and edema.

However, there is limited scientific research specifically validating these traditional kidney-supporting uses. Most modern studies on Hemidesmus indicus have focused on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties in vitro or in animal models.
