Kelp, a type of seaweed, has been used traditionally in various cultures for its nutritional and medicinal properties, but its specific use to support the kidneys is largely based on traditional herbal practices rather than robust scientific evidence. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), certain types of seaweed, including kelp (Laminaria spp.), are believed to help "soften hardness" and may be used in formulas intended to address fluid retention or swelling, symptoms sometimes associated with kidney imbalance. However, these uses are based on TCM theory rather than direct evidence of kelp supporting kidney function in the biomedical sense.
From a scientific perspective, kelp is rich in iodine and other minerals, and is primarily studied for its effects on thyroid health, not kidney support. There are currently no high-quality clinical trials or robust studies that demonstrate a direct benefit of kelp for kidney health or function. In fact, due to its high iodine and sodium content, excessive consumption of kelp could potentially be harmful to individuals with compromised kidney function or those on a sodium-restricted diet. Thus, while kelp has a long history of use in traditional medicine, there is little direct evidence to support its efficacy in supporting the kidney body system according to modern scientific standards.
