Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Southeast Asia, for various health purposes, including as a diuretic and for supporting urinary tract health. Its use for supporting the kidney system is primarily rooted in traditional and folk medicine, where it has been brewed as a tea or decoction to “cleanse” the kidneys or promote urination. However, direct references to kidney-specific benefits are limited in both ethnobotanical literature and traditional medical texts, with most references focusing more generally on its diuretic properties rather than direct kidney support or treatment of kidney disease. Scientific studies on lemongrass have shown some mild diuretic effects in animal models and in limited human studies. These effects could, in theory, support kidney function by increasing urine output, but there is a lack of robust clinical evidence demonstrating a direct, beneficial effect on kidney health or kidney disease. Reviews of medicinal plants for kidney support rarely highlight lemongrass as a primary agent.
