Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for supporting kidney health and function. In TCM, licorice is considered a harmonizing herb and is often included in formulas intended to tonify the kidneys and address various kidney-related conditions. It is believed to promote the flow of Qi and alleviate symptoms such as fatigue and edema, which can be associated with kidney deficiency.

However, scientific evidence specifically supporting licorice’s benefits for the kidney system is limited. Most modern research on licorice focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and gastrointestinal protective effects, rather than direct renal benefits.
