Lygodium, a genus of climbing ferns, has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia such as China and India. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the species Lygodium japonicum (commonly known as Japanese climbing fern) is sometimes included in herbal remedies believed to "clear heat" and "drain dampness," which are interpreted in some texts as actions relating to the urinary tract and, by extension, kidney health. In Indian folk medicine, related species have occasionally been used in remedies for urinary complaints and as diuretics, which can relate indirectly to kidney function. However, these uses are primarily based on historical and anecdotal traditions rather than modern scientific studies.

There is a notable lack of rigorous scientific research or modern clinical trials evaluating Lygodium’s efficacy or safety specifically for supporting kidney health.
