Evidence supporting the use of: Nitric Oxide
For the body system: Kidneys
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Nitric oxide (NO) has a scientifically validated role in supporting kidney (renal) function, primarily due to its effects on blood flow and vascular regulation. Nitric oxide is a naturally occurring signaling molecule in the body that helps relax blood vessels, thereby regulating blood pressure and ensuring adequate blood flow to various organs, including the kidneys. In the renal system, NO is produced by endothelial cells and plays a crucial part in modulating renal vascular resistance, glomerular filtration rate (GFR), and sodium excretion. Studies in both animals and humans have demonstrated that reduced NO availability is associated with impaired renal perfusion and is implicated in the pathogenesis of acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Clinical research also shows that therapies aimed at increasing NO bioavailability (such as L-arginine supplementation) can improve renal blood flow and function in certain conditions. However, while the physiological role is clear, the direct use of exogenous nitric oxide donors or precursors as a routine therapy for kidney support in healthy individuals is not well established, and most clinical interventions are limited to specific pathological conditions. Thus, while there is a moderate scientific foundation for the use of nitric oxide in supporting renal health, its application is context-dependent and not a general recommendation for kidney support in the absence of disease.
