Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pentacyclic triterpenoids are a diverse group of naturally occurring compounds found in many medicinal plants, such as Centella asiatica, Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice), and others. Their use to support kidney health is rooted primarily in traditional medicine systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In these systems, certain pentacyclic triterpenoid-containing herbs have been used for centuries to promote kidney function, address urinary disorders, and support overall renal health.

There is limited scientific validation for these uses. While some preclinical studies suggest pentacyclic triterpenoids may possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-fibrotic properties—mechanisms potentially beneficial for kidney protection—direct clinical evidence in humans is sparse. Most research to date has been conducted in vitro or in animal models, often focusing on specific compounds (such as asiatic acid, madecassic acid, or oleanolic acid) rather than the whole class. These studies have shown some renoprotective effects, such as reduction in markers of oxidative stress and inflammation in induced kidney injury models.

Nonetheless, these findings remain preliminary, and there are no large-scale human trials confirming their efficacy for supporting the kidney body system. Therefore, the use of pentacyclic triterpenoids for kidney support is justified more by traditional use than by robust scientific evidence.
